Convention Tip #1 – Pick One & Go To It

AKA Decision Time

If there are more than a few people interested in something, there is a convention for it. Since “writing” spans the breadth of many interests, there is often someone or something related to writing at a convention.

As I am interested in writing fantasy and science fiction, there are two local conventions I attend every year, ConDFW and FenCon.

For the past two years I have attended the World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) and this will be the first year I go to the World Fantasy Convention.

Since joining the DFW Writers Workshop, I attend their writing conference every year as well – great place to pitch an agent, BTW.

Conventions are a great place to meet authors, sometimes agents and editors, and other people who like the same kinds of things you do. You don’t have to attend the parties, you don’t have to go to a panel every hour, and it’s okay if you don’t hang out at the bar. Some day you may want to do one or more of those things because they can be fun. It’s taken me a few years to get to that point myself, so it is possible. :)

But you’ll never know until you pick a convention and go to it.

I visited FENCON for the first time this year. Neat-o cheeto. I’ll be at the DFWcon for the first time this coming April. I can’t wait. I’ve heard amazing things about it. Thanks for the info.

Excellent advice, especially for SF/Fantasy writers. I remember the year C.J. Cherryh vowed to attend a convention every weekend. It turned out to be the year she won the Hugo for Downbelow Station, in part because a lot of people who hadn’t read her before picked up a copy after seeing her at a con.

It was great see *you* at the North American DiscWorld Convention. I wish I could make it to the World Fantasy Con. I plan to see you at the DFW Writers Workshop.

I love that both FenCon and ConDFW are so close. And ConDFW has two amazing author Guests of Honor (GoH) for 2010: Elizabeth Moon and Jack McDevitt!

It was great to see you too, Carolyn! I’m excited about the DFW Writers Workshop conference and my agent pitch. Lots of work to do in the coming months.
